"The bluestocking"
Painfully shy, Miss Penelope Hastington, would rather read books and study such unladylike topics as mathematics and botany. Her mother hoped to climb the social ladder through her daughter’s marriage to someone in the aristocracy. Penny excelled at academic subjects but failed miserably at music and dancing as she had no sense of rhythm.
Maj. John “Jack” Stockbridge, who recently inherited the title, The Right Honorable Fryen, went to London to seek a wife. Still suffering a painful leg injury from the Peninsula War, he sought refuge in the library during a ball, lay on a sofa to ease the pain, and fell asleep. He failed to notice Penny, curled up in a wing chair and fast asleep. They had just awoken and discovered each other when Mrs. Hastington barreled into the library.
Penny was mortified when her mother demanded that the baron marry her daughter but was relieved when he refused. Instead, he made a shocking demand of his own.
